This movie is worth seeing, but not in theatres, the only thing keeping the movie alive was the action scenes and the performances, which were all very good.

Good flick. I liked it, start to finish. The action scenes were great, and I liked the story. Not sure where all the hate is coming for this movie. It's a movie, not real life... worth bowl of popcorn for sure.

I thought this movie was very solid. Your brainwashed religious fanatics will be first to tell you it is weak on the spiritual message. However, if you are open enough to accept that someone may have views that are different from your own, you might find a well made movie that is successful on more than one level. Most films that try to have a message fall painfully short, and I was impressed that though Book of Eli may have fallen short, it wasn't by too much. You can analyze the story on multiple levels. There was enough action to keep males entertained. The production and directing were top notch. The writing and dialogue was acceptable. Denzel was Denzel (think Man On Fire -almost the same character) and Gary Oldman, probably my favorite actor ever, always delivers. The point is you'll have lots to think about after the movie is over. I do not think the 'religious' message is clear at all and you could probably get away with liking it on other merits. I think the writer was creative in selecting the King James Bible and the printing press. Eli was meant to look like a modern-day prophet from God. Malcolm McDowell's character was extra lame and Solara was not believable but it's forgivable. Fun overall and I recommend it.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
I was playing Fallout 3 a few days before seeing this one and found them very much alike in terms of their depiction of a post-apocalyptic world. I found the depth of field here to be a little shallow for the slower pace, but there were some scenes which held their own. It seems, despite all the religious aspects, that this storyline ignores completely the revelation scenario in favor of the chaos of Mad Max. There is Eli on his divine QUEST, which seems to be wandering aimlessly for 35 years until he makes up his mind and picks a direction... And then there is his counterpart, the despot, who desires a divine OBJECT with which he can manipulate believers and control what little is left of the world. This distinction was the point I got from the movie, which was then tied up with a little twist and then everyone went home. Milla is a hottie and I liked her character, Denzel played simple but effective, and Gary Oldman could have brought more to his character.

Boring. Boring. Boring. Mad Max, resurrected, without Mel Gibson, any real excitement and a rather silly storyline. And no, I wasn't offended or bothered by the religious storyline. Gary Oldman's role was an embarassment. Ditto for Denzel Washington. The cinematography, with everything shot with a minimal amount of colour (to apparently portray a post apocalyptic world) was both absurd and annoying at the same time. Believe it or not, my wife liked it even less than I did.

Enjoyable, even though I'm not a religious person. A nice blend of Mad Max, The Road and The Gospel Road. Some may think the ending was a bit a gimmick ending but it worked for me. Actually, based on the ending, I'd like to see it again and not many movies make me feel that way. It was nice to see that the story was by Gary Whitta, the same Gary Whitta of PC Gamer fame.

This movie was everything I was expecting and hoping for from a post apocalyptic themed adventure. For those neanderthals that have seen it and don't get it; not sure why because the movie moves in a straight line. Protect the Book at all costs. This movie is a must see, especially if you have ever played Fallout 3 because you will see some scenes almost straight out of the game.

Great storyline. Very interesting and riveting, especially for someone interested in Religion. I noted the signifigance of the Quran on the shelf (and possibly other religious books I missed) near the end of the movie.

Ranks way up there as one of the worst movies I have ever wasted my money on. Pure garbage. Actually borders on offensive. Although, I'm sure most brainwashed religious fanatics will give it a high rating.

Saw it online and now I'm seeing it at the theater. The movie is great for discussion. Thoughtful viewers are divided whether the movie was pro-Bible or against. How would our critiques change if the book was the Koran instead? That's worth thinking about. The writing and the ironic ending should be appreciated by fans of Rod Serling. (Twilight Zone, Planet of the Apes) Bible themes portrayed heavily in his writing but we are not bothered by that. The emperor Diocletian ruled by martial law, confiscated all Bibles he could find and had them burnt.

Since Avatar people don't know how to rate movies anymore. It's 10 or 1. The site cinemamontreal is not the same anymore. You check it to know what movie is worth seeing and you see nothing. - I took a chance on Book Of Eli, and the production is awesome. Great music, great actors, great story, great for gamers who played Stalker SOT or Fallout 1 - 3, and I went on Wikipedia after just to clarify some questions. Go see it.

Should be viewed by all high school and college students with an opportunity to discuss the themes afterwards. Denzel is outstanding and so was the teenager from "Modern Family". No one is talking about this film because it is such a possibility. Thought-provoking is an understatement.

Too religious for the non-Christian, and too violent for the religious people. For a well written post-apocalyptic movie, watch The Road. This is a no-brainer version of it, for those who would consider a movie without a kung fu bladed hero as a boring one.

As good as any post-apocalyptic flick I've seen - and I've seen more than a few. Actually, this movie is better than a lot of them. I don't see why people should give it a poorer rating merely because it is the Bible the main character is protecting. Seems to me that doing so simply reveals how threatened these folk are by the Bible, which bears out the film's assertion that the Bible has, for good or ill, unusual power with people. Denzel did a perfectly fine job with his role. It was quite nice to see a "hero" who wasn't completely unwilling to be self-sacrificing, who had a purpose higher than himself, for a change. The action was pretty good, too.

This was a great movie hands down. I am not religious or Christian in any way [...] But that did not stop me from enjoying this movie very much so. It is a really good film. Acting was up there, they all do a great job, Denzel, Gary, Mila, Ray, the whole cast. Though Mila also gives us something nice to look at :) She is so tiny, especially with many of the men, being so large. I didn't realize it at first, but Jennifer Beals was in it, it suprised me. Though the story has that religious element, the whole idea of having faith and believing in something bigger than ourselves is great. There is the possiblity from the religious aspect, of its potential use for that which is negative or that which is positive. Good story, it's a little different, good cast, makes you think about how many things can be used for both good and evil, the power of an idea, you hope such things are used for good and the movie had a nice surprise at the end. Great movie.

I liked the story and how badass Denzel Washinton was. I found it a bit religious for my taste but it wasn't making fun of it like "The Invention of Lying" did. The ending is quite unexpected.

Eh it was okay. A little to heavy on the biblikal references. Which is okay in a film the action was descent and the ending was alright. The film isn't bad perce but it was too slow moving. I mean I found myself looking at my watch too many times to give it a higher rating.

This is a great movie that kept my interest throughout! Denzel and Gary Oldman are fantastic; pitted up against each other in this incredible world back-drop the Hughes brothers have created. I think that people who are writiing bad reviews about this movie based on religion alone have missed the point, and forgotten that all religions share the same belief in something greater than ourselves.

This movie was AWESOME! I did not know what I was going to see, and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. The twist at the end, the subject of the whole movie really did go a ways for me. I saw it with a group of friends, and found ourselves taking about it long after it was over and came ti the justification that it was worth seeing two or three more times. It may have a religious topic in there, but even though it had that, it had plenty of historical repetitions. Like the bible could be used as a source of power, control and tyranny, much like the church in the middle-ages. You don't have to be a "Believer" a "Christian" or whatever to enjoy this movie. Definitely one that will leave you thinking, and even just with the twist at the end, worth looking again to see the clues!

So most the opinions that were bad were basically anti religious snots saying bad story or no depth to story. LoL glad your not judging movies on a proffesional level, and even the the top critics have good review... Anyways super cool movie, main character is someone to look up to, the world would do good with people with that attitude. Cool story great action, violent yes, not much blood though, anywho reminded me of Fallout if there are any fans?

Now, I'm all for a good action/thinking movie. But you know what. Leave the religious-filled ending alone. We didn't need it! Worth seeing? Not for Denzel sorry. Usually I love him, in this I don't know... trying to hard maybe? Now, for Mila yes. For Jennifer Beals, yup. For Gary, of course! But please if you go, don't stay to serious. They are some very funny moments, including one very well placed insult from Mila, that makes this movie worth watching.

Parents beware... this is not for kids! This is an adult movie. Scenes of violence and rape are constant, overwhelming at times. Theme and mood is way over anything kids can deal with. Saw parents with their 8 yr olds there! Too much for even for young teens. Be nice to your kids a get a babysitter!

Absorbing and intense leaving one's emotions in a state of upheaval. God's powerful intervention in the devastation of earth, where it comes to a violent and cataclysmic end, in which everything is laid bare is certainly worth the consideration of thought. This post-apocalyptic western has interesting cinematography:the wasteland is composed of washed-out colours, where everything is grey and beige. The action scenes are very well done, with the hero using a variety of weapons. Once again, Gary Oldman is superb as the main villain. With 15 minutes left in the film, I thought that I had fiqured out how it was going to end, but I was mistaken.
