    42

This was the first REAL movie of substance that I have seen this year. I love historical genres and sports movies with profiles of special figures in history. Harrison Ford gave an Oscar worthy performance; his best ever in my opinion. I cried and laughed but was mostly horrified at the depiction of racism which was probably a small fraction of what Jackie Robinson and his family endured. I am inspired to read the book and I think people of all ages should see this movie and others like it. These stories must be told over and over lest we forget. Civil rights movies of any kind, moves me and there are so many things at play in this film. Living your dream against adversity that feels insurmountable, perserverence, humanity and inhumanity, love, sadness, hope (depicted with the little boy at the end who becomes something special!), and most of all, sadly, a statement still of our times all over the world. Prejudice, I believe, begins young and at home. Society is obligated to change this if we want to live in peace. For those who have no regard for human life, it is incomprehensible to me. It was interesting that the audience remained for the credits, as usually they exit before. I believe it is a testament to the movie, all those who made it happen and the important messages contained within. 42 is a lucky number for me and it is more than appropo that it is the only number retired from the MLB!
