    5 to 7

Ah! To think of New York City as it once was... alas never to be again! In this film, a genre so often called romantic comedy, a romance is brewing just outside the St. Regis, a romance between a younger man and older prominent French woman with 2 children, wife of a diplomat. THIS GIVES NOTHING AWAY AS IT IS THE VERY OPENING SCENES OF THE FILM. The feature is set in some indeterminant, immediate past before all our modern technology, before smart phones became the greatest objects of desire for anyone remotely breathing. 5 to 7 ( the hours the lovebirds have together) takes place in a NYC that looks, sounds and feels like so many memories, something that disconcerted me a good deal. I liked that NY much more than the city today, hardly recognizable with everything vintage or of sentimental value literally gone with the wind. In any case this film with a good amount of soul and nostalgia brings Eric Stoltz back to the screen along with Anton Yelchin and his parents, traditionalists Frank Langella and Glenn Close. As with such illicit romances, something's eventually got to give. New York of old becomes literally one of the characters of this piece so do I identify with it and mourn its passing. If you think of Woody Allen's Manhattan from the 1970's you will understand my sentiment and sense of loss.
