A film with this pedigree should be an instant classic. Anything less has to be ranked as a letdown. So while American Hustle is certainly worthy of all the praise it has received, it simply is not the masterpiece I was hoping for. As one would expect, the acting is the highlight here. Both Bale and Cooper excel in the respective roles as con artist and FBI agent and Amy Adams has her best part to date as the sexy con woman that comes between them. However, it is Jennifer Lawrence who steals the show as Bale's trainwreck of a wife. She will have you in stitches as a woman impossible to stand yet impossible to resist. The based on a true story narrative is where things get a little murky. For the plot and its execution are never as interesting as the people executing it and the final "twist" is one most savy audiences will see coming a mile away. This prevents the film from truly scoring a bullseye and though I doubt anyone will walk out of the theatre feeling conned they may walk out feeling a little dissappointed.
