    American Sniper

Much of the praise and criticism I have heard about American Sniper has to do with the politics surrounding the film or the validity of some plot lines, character traits, etc. While these topics will remain up for debate, American Sniper, as a film, offers audience members the opportunity to see the film from different perspectives, depending on their political standpoint. The message does not sit within a purely black and white context, but rather is up for interpretation within viewer's personal thoughts and feelings. This can be said of many movies, but within the context of the issues surrounding a plot like that of American Sniper, the potential for debate is increased and so the potential for controversy is increased. As a film however, it works and delivers on many levels. Bradley Cooper's lead performance is outstanding, and is definitely worthy of the Oscar nomination he received. He is able to play both the subtle and not-so-subtle aspects of his character with incredible ease. Despite being a known commodity, I did not once think "oh, Bradly Cooper is playing Chris Kyle." Rather, he disappeared into the role and did not stand out as being an actor in a movie, but rather a character in a story. American Sniper shifts back and forth between locations and tone with ease, but occasionally has trouble maintaining the pace between sections of the film. The movie succeeds at maintaining a smooth, yet ever-changing tone. It admittedly did struggle with presenting the passage of time, making some scenes hard to follow as it was unclear how much time had passed between scenes. While much of the film is bold in its portrayal of war and the human side of war, I found that a few scenes were a little too "safe." Whether it is trying to avoid offending any audience members, or simply wasn't covered thoroughly in the script, a few moments lacked the emotional impact they could have had. I must emphasize however, that these scenes are in the minority, and while they are noticeable, they do not detract from the rest of the movie as a whole. American Sniper is a very good movie that is going to have many people talking over the next little while; and I recommend that you join in on the conversation and watch the movie.
