The trajectory of Amy Winehouse' life and death will be of no surprise to her fans. I, however, knew her only from photographs in newspapers and magazines. I was aware of tattoos and drugs, that's it. Fortunately Amy's friends and family were keen on taking photographs and home movies, so others in the theatre like myself received an opportunity to see a young, not very attractive Jewish girl with an overload of charisma, a sunny outlook on life and a marvelous singing voice mature into a young woman that could write songs and sing them so achingly it would raise the hairs on the back of your neck. The film, under British director Asif Kapadia's caring hand, seemed to go right into Amy's heart with the paydays, the papparazzi, the entourage, and the feel-better antidotes all seeming to increase at a quickening pace. Academically, some may feel that the film runs a little long and the photographs at its conclusion are uncomfortable to see. Amy's life wasn't too long though and the photos at the end were, some would say, inevitable.

I thought Amy was very beautiful. Not in a conventional way but because her beauty was different does not mean she was not attractive.
I thought Amy was beautiful too but not, as you say, in a conventional way.
