    Arachnophobia

"Arachnophobia" is not only a creature-feature with some genuine squirmy moments but it's also a terrific comedy. It nicely balances out the moments where you'll be uneasy in your seat wondering if that itch behind your ear is something you should be worried about and the times where you'll be howling. When Dr. Ross Jennings (Jeff Daniels) and his family move to a small town, they have high hopes. Ross is going to take over the previous doctor's practice and they'll all happily get away from the stress of the big city. Unfortunately for them, a newly discovered Venezuelan spider is accidentally brought to a small American town, people start getting dead. The worst part isn't the lethal little arachnids though, it's that Ross is absolutely terrified of spiders.

Not only is "Arachnophobia" clever in its humor, but it understands why spiders are frightening more than any other run-of-the-mill critter picture. A less well-made film would feature very big spiders or settle for just using tarantulas."Arachnophobia" keeps the critters small and chooses a breed of spider that doesn't look like your average eight-legged crawlie, which means they are believable as a deadly package that's small... small enough to hide inside your shoe, underneath a cup, inside the water pipes of the bathroom and even under the lid of your toilet. This paranoia that the spiders could be anywhere means that the thrills are effective; you never know when they're going to strike so you're consistently on your toes. The special effects are also excellent. You'll be constantly wondering "how did they pull that one off? "

Another key to the film's success are the characters. They are unique and well developed so you're immediately interested in seeing the good ones live and the bad ones bite the dust. I found John Goodman as an eccentric exterminator to be particularly memorable.

I feel like "Arachnophobia" is one of those movies that's been forgotten, and it's begin to be rediscovered. It's a lot of fun and really well put together; you'll have a blast watching it as a creature feature and a horror comedy. (On Dvd, November 16, 2012)
