    Black Narcissus

Powell and Pressburger take us on another journey without leaving the studios, this time a journey into madness. Beautiful miniature buildings and mountains in matte convincingly portray the Himalayas while technicolor treatment of the settings magnify the beauty of wherever our gaze lands. The conflicts between the interloping nuns and the area's native residents come to an unsurprising conclusion, but the solitude and loneliness of the ladies of the church causes them to entertain memories they thought had disappeared forever. There is no display of sex, but sensuality is present throughout. As usual, Powell and Pressburger have given us a tale that is both a feast for the eyes and fodder for the mind.
