    Boyhood

Boyhood is one of the most highly reviewed films of all time. It holds a whopping 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and an astounding 100 on Metacritic. Since I heard of the unique premise, I was instantly excited to see this movie. Well, Boyhood is a total masterpiece and should be seen by all film lovers. The story follows Mason, as five year old boy, as he grows up and enters adulthood. As many of you may know, Boyhood took over twelve years to make. TWELVE YEARS! It follows the same cast of actors over twelve years to actually watch them grow up. This idea is incredibly unique, but could easily have been a a gimmick. This movie is no gimmick. Everything about this movie is masterful and utterly impressive in every way. Richard Linklater once again proves to be one of the best and most underrated directors and writers working today. The writing in this film is so realistic that I got chills. Since there was no clear story, it had to be held by the writing, acting and directing. The movie really captured childhood in the best way I've ever seen put to film. Mason did many things that I personally did as a kid such as playing on a Gameboy Advance SP and watching Dragonball on Toonami. They really captured how a kid would act and talk at the age he was at. Linklater directs this movie to perfection and takes beautiful shots. The writing is so brilliant and well deserves an Oscar. The acting in this film is also masterful. Ellar Coltrane plays Mason impeccably well and is believable from beginning to end. The real standout here is easily Patricia Arquette. She deserves an Oscar nomination for her beautiful performance. Ethan Hawke also gives a fantastic performance. The soundtrack is brilliant and is very well placed without taking over the film. It it very well edited and it allows you to figure out what year it is without telling you. The pace is perfect because the movie is three hours long and it feels like two. It passes by super fast. Overall, Boyhood is a cinematic masterpiece. A movie of this calibre is very rare these days and shows how much care you can put into a film. Boyhood is tied with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as my #1 movie of 2014 and I am predicting Oscars across the board. I urge you to see this ASAP. RATING: 10/10.
