    Boyhood

As ideas for screenplays diminish, documentaries and reality shows are appearing more and more frequently on both the big screen and your TV. Richard Linklater (Before Sunset series) has taken the concept into a new era here, extending the filming to cover a twelve year period using a fictional growing family of four as his central characters. The film is not designed to present fatal illnesses, tragedy and horrific events. It includes far more of those things that plague a more typical North American family; divorce, unemployment, attempts at new relationships and unfulfilled dreams. For the youngsters: bullying, being ordered around by power-seeking adults, totally embarrassing situations, bullying as both recipient and participant and later, sex, drugs and leaving home. A lot of these moments and other memories were brought to mind. The school teachers good and bad, the good advice I did or didn't receive, the love given or squandered and the many people who filled a time slot in my life, then disappeared. Not an action film, but not based on comic books either.
