BRAZIL is considered by many an excellent film, do I dare say masterpiece. NOT IN MY BOOK! Not by a long shot!
BRAZIL, a dramatic film with fantasy overtones from Terry Gilliam, is to put it bluntly one of five films I truly hate. First of all Terry Gilliam is a director I don't see eye to eye with, actually his work really bothers me a great deal. Brazil, like so many of his works has a basic, simple plot but by the time he adds his fantasmagorical mess to the piece it is almost impossible to decipher or one is simply not in the mood for his usual style of direction WHICH NEVER CHANGES. You might remember that he directed HEATH LEDGER'S last, incomplete film, THE IMAGINARIUM of DOCTOR PARNASSUS which I could only tolerate because I loved Heath Ledger so much as an actor. Gilliam does the say thing with IMAGUNARIUM! In BRAZIL, even the mainly brilliant, British cast of Robert DeNiro, Michael Palin, the great Jonathan Pryce, Katherine Helmond, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins and Jim Broadbent could not bring the film to life for me. What begins as a basic mistake by a civil servant, before the computer/viral age, starts to escalate to the point that it was literally jangling my nerves. But that is, I repeat, what Gilliam continuously does. Everyone of his films starts on this modicum of sanity but ends up in a bizarre, whacked out world that I despise. I know exactly what he is going for in his films ( it doesn't take a genius to figure out) What I mainly object to is his usual techniques, well, even some of his themes which he repeats over and over again. THANKFULLY IT TAKES HIM YEARS TO USUALLY GET ANOTHER FILM ON THE MARKET, the last one being Heath Ledger's incomplete feature which would now be at least 7 years ago. Mr. GILLIAM, can you possibly try another genre! Your so-called gifts as a director are pretty stale. I don't care, at this point, how good a film of yours may be as I'm bored to death with your entire approach and sensibilities which are nerve-wracking!
