    Caddyshack

"Caddyshack" features a very thin plot and the humor is very juvenile, but you can’t argue with the laughs that it delivers. Dany (Michael O’Keefe) works as a caddy at the upscale Bushwood Country Club, making decent money (for a caddy) helping out Ty Webb (Chevy Chase.) Things are peaceful around the golf course until Al Czervik (Rodney Dangerfield) an obnoxious, newly wealthy shows up. Meanwhile, greenskeeper Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) is staging an all-out war against a gopher infestation.

Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, and Billy Murray (along with the incredibly fake-looking gopher puppet) completely steal the show so you don't really care that characters who were introduced earlier in the film disappear completely for large chunks of the running time. The three comedians have some fantastic, memorable lines and some great jokes throughout, including one of my all-time favorite final lines before the credits roll. Everyone here is having such a good time that the movie and the audience forget about the plot, meaning it suddenly rears its head and gets wrapped up very quickly. It’s predictable anyway so you won’t mind one bit. “Caddyshack” feels essentially like a 22-minute episode of a sketch TV show that could never find the courage, or be foolish enough to cut out any of the golden jokes until they realized “hey wait a second, we have an hour and thirty nine minutes’ worth of stuff… why not just make this a movie? ”

Spoiler alert - click to reveal textThere's a nice mix of slapstick and stand-up humor, the jokes are crude and memorable, there's a lot of nudity, someone mistakes a candy bar for a turd, Bill Murray bites the head off an explosive rabbit, Rodney Dangerfield watches TV out of the world's greatest golf bag and the bad guy gets what he deserves in the end. Despite being over 30 years old the movie never feels dated and it's still hilarious. Even if you're not a fan of the featured comedians this will make you at least chuckle consistently, if not turn you into an outright fan. “Caddyshack” is crude and juvenile, but that’s ok. There’s no need to try and justify why you’re gong to like it, just tell people that it’s a comedy that delivers the laughs and that’s plenty of justification. (On Dvd, May 28, 2013)
