This is a missed opportunity. A wonderful idea, written with a sledgehammer rather than a plume. The script is clunky, obvious, over-the-top and crude. The characters are cartoonish and the humour collegiate. With a good director, the two stars, Olivia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker, would be luminous, and their performances would be nuanced. But in this movie, they're not. As it is, Cloudburst is impossible to take seriously when it tries to be 'meaningful' and unfunny when it is supposed to be amusing. I hate to say it, but it displays all the hallmarks of bad Canadian television drama of the 70's and 80's, and adds self-conscious, over the top profanity as a substitute for believable relationship. Even the cinematography is sub-par. There are a couple of funny lines, and the intentions are, I'm sure, noble, but sadly this rates a failing grade.
