    Dear Frankie

Dear Frankie by first time director Shona Auerbach surprised me in any number of ways. First of all this tale of a mother protecting her son has an almost fable like quality which I liked very much. There is a sensitivity to the film that is very real, one that is not over sentimentalized, yet it always remains heart warming and touching. One very deliberate thing the director did was to avoid any sort of modern technology within her film so to completely concentrate on matters of the heart. It is also a very smart move as the film does not seem dated at all since it was made 12 years ago. Emily Mortimer as the mother is utterly perfect casting. She becomes Lizzie, the mom, to the full and remains so through all her trials and tribulations, as even keeled as possible for her nine year old boy. Gerard Butler as the Stranger is a stroke of divine intervention. He's a man's man but one who cares for issues around him; he is never selfish. He appears a totally trusting man, one who can form deep bonds when called upon. And so he is liked by the characters on screen and by the viewing audience who look upon him almost as a saviour. The nine year old playing Frankie captures every nuance of such a boy both on a physical level as well as on another dimension, in the privacy of his own little world. This is one of those films that one never knows what to expect but as we roll along with intimate touches here and there, it is a film that will tug at your heart. I'm thrilled many men responded very favourably to this feature. Beautiful film in every sense.
