Elysium as a SciFi film has a lot going for it. A big budget, a pair of terrific, bankable lead actors in Matt Damon and Jodie Foster and a director, Neil Blomkamp coming off smash SciFi sensation of his own with District 9. Yet apart from the dazzling design of the Utopian space society itself, nothing about Elysium feels particularly special. The ruins of earth depicted here bear such a striking resemblence to the ruins depicted in District 9 that you'd swear Blomkamp used the same set for both. The film's first half meanders through a half-hearted indictment of the US health care system, while the second half settles for the more traditional action route, providing District 9 allum Sharlto Copley a chance to chew the scenery as the vile South Africain villain Kruger, a chance he relishes. Not much else is memorable, basically if you've seen the trailer you've seen the movie.
