    Focus

I saw Focus primarily because of Will Smith. He is such a likeable and charismatic actor, that while I don’t love every movie of his, he always gives a great performance. That is the case for Focus. I did not love the movie, nor did I dislike it, as it had many redeeming qualities that do end up slightly outweighing the negatives. The film’s talented cast is its most prominent virtue; Will Smith and Margo Robbie provide leading performances that stand out against the glamorous sets and occasionally intelligent script. Despite the character buildup being practically non-existent, it is extremely hard not to want to root for Will Smith’s character (despite many of his actions and attributes) Margo Robbie plays a compelling mirror character, and the two actors form a bond in the movie that is completely believable. A character driven film simply does not work without stand-out performances from its actors, and Focus is able to accomplish that. The opening scene is an ideal set up for this movie, as it sets the tone, characters and humor, which the film is able to maintain for a good portion of the runtime. There are funny moments sprinkled among the scenes, and one extended sequence in particular that, despite having no action, was as intense as any action movie climax. However, after this superbly executed sequence, the movie takes a nosedive in its ability to keep the audiences’ interest. For a while, Focus loses focus, and almost becomes somewhat of a different movie. The characters remain interesting, yet the plot stays still. Focus becomes less and less engaging until its climax finally hits. Here, the movie picks up the pace and even throws in a good plot twist. But then it throws in another plot twist, and another until eventually, it becomes hard to keep caring. One of the best scenes of the movie lost its impact due to the (now anticipated) twist that inevitably came with it. Overall, Focus is not a great, nor a bad movie. The film’s first half is engaging, but there comes a point where it starts to lose much of what it had going for it. The performances are strong and the movie has its moments (and many of them), but it is hard to recommend, especially for a theatre trip. If you are a fan of Will Smith, you may certainly enjoy this, but as a movie, it falls into the category of *see it if it’s on TV*.
