Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket is a pretty extraordinary war film, specifically on Viet Nam. It had the misfortune to come out after many other great films on Viet Nam which somewhat diminished box office receipts. It is a film that plays out in two acts culminating in in a very important event in 1968. The entire cast of pros specifically Vincent D'Onofrio as an outsider sort of recruit are brilliant with R. Lee Ermey, a Viet Nam drill sergeant, not an actor, a tough SOB who gets very high marks for his role in this brave film. Kubrick truly captures what war must be like. It's not just a narrative film but a truth about that war.
