Perhaps I'm reacting to a widely missed opportunity to parallel a classic with modern comedy. Minimalist comedy, as drama and tragedy almost inadvertently interfere, but for the most part we watch the dead-pan face of a local baker inanimately attempt to empower the life of Madame Bovery into the behaviour of a bored Brit living in Bovery's France. Tepid to the extreme and not a grain of wit or cuisine to distract.
