Comedies can be hilariously entertaining... if they're funny. While I applaud Get Hard for occasionally making me laugh, the movie is extremely tedious in its inability to entertain. The jokes are there, but the movie doesn't try to do much with its assets, and provides nothing new or surprising. It is extremely disappointing when you are able to guess the punch-line of every joke before it even hits. The film's problem isn't with its stars (Farrell and Hart), as their comedic chemistry is what ultimately ends up almost saving the movie. The two actors also provide a lot of physical humor that is admittedly funny, but the writing itself is too paint-by-numbers to provide anything memorable. It is almost as if the writers were reviewing the script over and over again, saying "let's insert a joke here, and maybe some body humor there." Some of the jokes worked, but a lot did not, making the movie feel lazy at times, as if it were just going through the motions. Get Hard had a promising premise, and two very funny and likeable stars, but wastes them by only striving for the low hanging fruit. It doesn't try to be anything special, and rather "settles" to be a dumb comedy. Get Hard isn't completely terrible, but its few funny scenes are not worth a trip to the theatre.
