    Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy was one of my most anticipated movies of 2014. I adore most Marvel movies, Star Wars and Star Trek. Guardians looked like a brilliant mix of those three, plus hilarious humour and a bizarre tone. I was a little worried though, because it is really easy to mess up the story of the Guardians. Well, I was not disappointed and Guardians of the Galaxy was a brilliant and hilarious space adventure! The story follows a group of space misfits as they team together to defeat an evil force from destroying the galaxy. There is so much to love about this movie. The best part, in my opinion, has to be the characters. All of the Guardians were totally loveable in every way. Star Lord (Peter Quill), Gamora and Drax were very interesting and had their moments, but the obvious highlights were Groot and Rocket. Groot really surprised me. He was absolutely hilarious, but he also added some emotion to the film that came with only three words: “I AM GROOT”. Rocker Raccoon was also a big surprise. He was easily the funniest character, with sarcasm spewing out of his mouth right and left. He was a really loveable fur-ball. I could spend pages writing about these amazing characters, but now I have to move on to the story. The plot of this movie is basically if Star Wars, Star Trek, The Avengers and Spaceballs all had a baby. Even having read the comics as a child, the plot was unpredictable and fast paced. The two-hour runtime passed by super fast and I really wished it wouldn’t end; and that’s a compliment! It concluded in the best way possible, with easily the greatest after-credits scene I’ve ever seen! The special effects, CGI and were top-notch and looked absolutely gorgeous. The 3D actually enhanced the beauty on screen, especially on a ginormous IMAX screen. The alien characters, especially Rocket and Groot, looked so real. The soundtrack, featuring hits from the 70s and 80s, was one of the best in years! I bought it immediately when I returned home from the cinema. The score by Tyler Bates paid homage to the themes of Star Wars and Star Trek, while still being original in it’s own way. I could only find one fault with this movie, and that’s the villain. Though not as bad as that dude from Thor: The Dark World, Ronan was an entirely forgettable villain that really had no motive behind what he was trying to accomplish. Marvel has yet again created amazing characters facing forgettable villains. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy met my impossibly high expectations and proves to be one of the best movies of 2014 and probably the best Marvel film to date (sorry Avengers)! Please run out to see this ASAP on the biggest screen possible! RATING: 9.5/10.
