    Hot Tub Time Machine

This is a tired comedy. The slap stick aspect was barely present. No groin shots like Homer Simpson likes but there were the other more uncomfortable kinds. [...] It is a bit too racy for the younger kids and has lots of F bombs. The story was far too random. This genre of movie will ever be nominated to best picture but they should at least try to be fresh. The audience is not given enough "history" of each character in order to garner our sympathies for their assorted foibles. The movie reminded me of Couples Retreat in this aspect. A rather random storyline that waffled all over the place. In the end nothing was tidied up. It was just a series of semi-funny events tied together, and none of them were witty, clever or new. It was almost like an improv event. Watch Back to the Future instead of this one.

This movie seems to have all of the typical crap of any comedy done these days. This one surprised me and actually made me laugh. Watch it again. Nobody cares about the characters and their past. It's a comedy. Let loose and enjoy!.. :-)

Thanks for your note. I disagree about the character development. Hangover was a fine comedy as they spent the first part of the movie (pre-Vegas) introducing the characters eg hen-pecked husband... weird brother in law. Then when the fun started we had a better appreciation of the assorted events. I know what you mean when you ask me to let loose. I just think that the audience needs to be set up at a movie. On television we know the characters in weekly shows like two and a half men or the Simpsons. Movies need to spend some time with development. This was done nicely in Pineapple Express, Forty Year Old Virgin, Get Smart, and Hangover but not in Hot tub, Couples Retreat, or cop out. Willis' character was a total fail as was his partner with no depth and therefore no reason for me to sympathize. If they aren't going to do this then at least have some serious slap stick or develop a scene that is genuinely embarrassing to all of us so that we can be squeamish. The only scene like that in the Hot tub movie was the losing of the football bet... but then they copped out at the end of the scene with a faint... Thanks again Free style. It just seems to me that some of these comedies are done in a weekend, over a joint, and not well planned.

What do you think of changing your hot tub review with your old dogs review? I would reverse these two, any thoughts?

I had to re-read my posting for old dogs. Both movies were in the "meh" range. But Old dogs seemed to have a few funnier moments. The double groin shot at the golf course, the scenes where the meds were mixed up, and the gorilla "I'm all out of love" part. Those three parts alone would give it the edge over time machine. I can't even think of one scene in hot tub that make me even smile. In time machine I would give them the 'acting' edge as Old Dogs were all tired in their roles including the kids. Maybe the tired part was intentional but certainly it was not done in a comedic way. If I was given a gift of either movie for free, I would politely decline.

Both were not great, I guess I rather have a dirtier comedy than a cheezy one. In my books the hot tub trumps the old dogs. Out of curiosity would you watch the simpsons or family guy if you had to choose?

HI again Mich. It's too bad there isn't an easier way to find entries!! I prefer Homer and Marj. I do like Family guy and the kids prefer it over the Simpsons... so I lose my vote. Maybe it's my age but I don't find too many things that make me laugh... or even smirk. There seems to be a lot more creativeness in both of these cartoon shows on a weekly basis than any movie I've seen on a long time. Oh and my kids also like South Park... which is also a tad racy.

I think that's why you like old dogs over Hot tub. I like Family Guy alot better. South park I can take it or leave it. My daughter is still in the super y and what's your news stage. I saw Kick Ass last night and wow! What a different movie, it's safe to say I don't want my daughter watching it!
