A stellar film! Paul Gross is what drew me in, with all his natural talents, both in comedy and drama, writing, producing and directing-and all this being Canadian. It is very much a factual and thought provoking film; so many perspectives, many stories, different agendas, twists and turns, great characters and above all, a questioning of the senselessness of this complex war and how we so easily send out our troops to do the deeds they must do. I don't think that comes natural for them. It tugs at your heartstrings and I think that the female love interest, (excellent), exemplified the excruciating "pain" that is experienced as a consequence of war. Gross did not miss a trick. He wrote with a unique respect, authenticity and intelligence backed by a lot of research and interviews-even visiting the enduring setting of Afghanistan itself. His insertion of the local tribes, the wonderful music including the power of the bagpipes, facts and metaphorical quotes of his narrations, really moved the plot along, providing more suspense, drama and holding you at the edge of your seat. I learned many things from this film. Even the "small" facts re the air force base were mind boggling. I originally saw this at Tiff, Roy Thompson Hall, but the relatively small screen and seated so high up, did not do the film, justice. See it on the big screen where you will hear every noise and the deafening silence, see through the eyes of many players, imagine the scents and mostly be touched by a huge range of emotions. Kudos to Paul for an incredibly mesmerizing piece of reality.
