This Polish mood-piece by Pawel Pawlikowski (My Summer of Love) is a compact masterpiece in shimmering black and white. Both the Poland of the holocaust and of the modern day dictatorship are presented in contast. The story is seen through the eyes of the young novitiate (the stunning Trzebuchowska) as she tries to make sense of her past. Veteran Aga Kulesza as the hedonistic aunt provides a sharp counterpoint to the naivety of the young Ida.
