I had to see this movie twice, not because it's good, but because I wanted to make sure I did not leave any pieces out. It's an ambitious movie, and maybe too much so. It moves at an unequal pace, and the music is so loud that sometimes you can't even hear what is being said. I guess that during post prod, no emotions were felt from the reel alone, and they thought loud music would make a palatable ersatz? Not so. Also, the movie is looong and some sequences don't really fit in : the whole first segment on earth with the family; the drone search; and the school stuff was unnecessary. Same for the footage on the frozen planet. (despite breathtaking scenes) The movie argues that LOVE transcends space, time and gravity, but I felt NONE of it. Actually, the relationship between the father and his daughter looked like a husband/wife relationship, and that made me feel uneasy. On a different note, casting was odd: Mcconaughey was partially believable (as a daredevil pilot, but where all the other characters were white like ghosts, he looked more like a surfer than a farmer), but Hathaway was plainly out of place and completely failed to properly play a scientist (maybe she should have sung her role or have a complete personal makeover during the movie, or both? ) Chastain was good throughout and can't help but root for her. Anyhow, Matt Damon should have landed the first role (no pun intended): he's rock solid. On the technical side, I didn't care if the science was right or not (black hole, the 5th dimension, etc.) It's sitll unproven theories. Period. Nobody complained about technology in ET, Aliens, Thor or Harry Potter. Why here? But on the whole, the movie didn't deliver. Too ambitous, its loose story and "pretty" images cannot compensate for the lack of dialogue, story, emotions, and good acting. Bring earplugs. This review is like the movie: it wants to cover too many topics, it's all over the place and it doesn't deliver. Do you feel love?
