The inexorable appeal of sexual gratification supports this film's plot, and once you have committed to that undertaking, your life is lost. The depressing aspect of the premise is vitalized by an oppressive, relentless soundtrack, and the cheese-delicious sight of the great undead following you everywhere you go.
The sex is so subtle in It Follows you are tempted to forget it's there. Like scratching a persistent itch, the intercourse provides a balm. It is the incessant, slow, deliberate approach of death that horrifies. Whether at a stroll or a gallop, it is coming for all of us, avoid it how we may.
The opening image of the busted leg grosses you right out, and leaves you begging inwardly that you have seen the last of them. After that, it is ninety minutes of almost constant dread. Mercifully, It Follows is tasteful horror that respects the audience. There are shocks but well-earned, and absorbed by that defibrillator soundtrack.
Smart teenagers are to be celebrated. Here we have such a group - no morons. Even the typical teenage lusty male, who initially, callously passes the hex to the heroine, is redeemed by his utter terror. It is hard to despise a guy who's frightened out of his wits.
The ending in the pool aims high but misses on the climax, perhaps leaving us to remember that the fun is in the foreplay, but just try to put a stop to that primordial urge!
A morality play, It Follows deserves to be shown to teen health classes on sex education.
