    Judgement at Nuremberg

This riveting social commentary of a film covers the auspicious Nuremberg Trials for Crimes committed during WW II. It's B + W cinematography was more in line with the dreadful theme of finding a good many men instrumental with crimes against humanity. Stanley Kramer pulls out all the stops once again with this enormous film in theme and in terms of great actors as he takes the director's chair again for this film. Spencer Tracey plaid the American Head Judge with just the right amount of solmemnity, but Maximiliian Schell as the lead German defender was was a force to be reckoned with as he took the Oscar to Tracey's loss. Two other performances in a feature filled with great performances stood out: that of supporting players Judy Garland as a young Jewish woman giving testimony about a kind German Jew who treated her well during the war and Montgomery Clift in a performance that could bring anyone to tears. To my mind this should have been the best film of 1961, but the Academy chose their usual favourite musicals, in this case: WEST SIDE STORY. Both Nuremberg supporting players lost Oscars to the supporting players in West Side Story, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris... Everything about the film was accurate right to the configuration of the courtroom with the unbreakable glass in which sat the highest offenders in crimes against humanity. Abby Mann wrote his screenplay from a previous screenplay of his based on a television event. He took the Oscar for screenplay. The movie consists of social moments and highlights, then right back into the famous courthouse where two thirds of the film played out! It was a groundbreaking film. Fabulous in every way!
