    Juwanna Mann

"Juwanna Mann" does its best, but the premise has been done to death and that makes the movie predictable. From the beginning of the movie you'll be able to pretty accurately predict what's going to happen and most of the jokes too. If you can manage to bear with me for a second, I'll tell you what this movie is about. Jamal Jeffries (Miguel A. Núñez, Jr.) is a basketball star who finally gets booted out of the big league after his latest asinine stunt. Without any money, he decides to dress up as a woman named “Juwanna Mann” and start playing professionally that way. If it all feels familiar, it’s not that you’ve seen this movie before, it’s that there’s not a whole lot of imagination here.

This is one of those movies you watch in order to prove to your gullible friends that you have fortune-telling powers. You can bet that there's going to be a shower scene where *gasp* "Jamal" will hardly be able to keep his composure when the female players get naked. You can also expect that he'll develop feelings for the second-best player on the team (here played by Vivica A. Fox) Why the second best player? Because of course he'll become an all-star and completely blow the rest of them away with his disguised manly skills. From there, you know that because of the deception he won't be able to tell her about his feelings for her or the truth and when he inevitably does, there's going to be a big dramatic falling out. As for the comedy sequences, you can bet that there will be at least one instance where he'll be uncomfortable getting hit on by sleazy men and maybe, just maybe he'll learn the true spirit of playing basketball by getting in touch with his feminine side. The only downside to being able to show off to your friends that you have become a clairvoyant will be that somehow you couldn't predict how lame this movie was.

I'll admit that there are some laughs once in a while and that the movie wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be. Nonetheless, the characters are flat, the jokes are juvenile and it's not even so bad that it becomes fun to tear apart. I groaned out loud when I realized that the one character that OF COURSE turns out to be an adulterer got no character development whatsoever, meaning he might as well have been completely absent from the picture. It's just there to make a sleazy guy that we're supposed to cheer for seem less sleazy, but I don't buy it. If you watch this movie, I hope you like jokes about prosthetic breasts because that's one of the few jokes you will remember from the film once it's over. Not because it's good mind you.

If the film had gone crazier or just had the guts to try something way out there or be more nonsensical it could have been a stand out in the genre. Yeah I know I'm grasping at straws but really, this movie isn't the abomination I expected it to be."Juwanna Mann" Is just another mediocre entry in the "black man dresses up as a woman for comedic effect" genre that has its moments and a couple of laughs.
