Shakespearean tragedy dressed up as a gangster movie leads us through the turbulent relationship between two twins. For one, being a gangster is the means to an end - perpetual violence. For the other, the violence is the means to an end, to get what he wants. Both are ruthless, but one is insane and both are irrevocably bound to each other. Superb acting by Tom Hardy playing both lead characters, and a perfect supporting ensemble, including a good bit from the old Doctor Who. This compelling piece shows us Reg Kray's mental agony as he tries to do right by his Mum and support his brother. His inability to value anyone else's contribution, no matter how sizeable, above his duty to his brother leads him down a predictable path of self destruction. Excellent writing. The angst is palpable throughout.
