Formidable! Having no previous exposure to the theatrical version nor the music, my only preconceived ideas re this film evolved from reviews and previews of the film. Tom Hooper directed a heart wrenching and courageous depiction of the human spirit, despair, redemption and sacrifice. Ann Hathaway and Hugh Jackman emoted with such passion and theatrics while singing, that it could bring a tear to anyone's eye. Cossette's love interest (Redmayne) also performed brilliantly in song and in acting ability. His first performance that I had noted him, was Warhorse and he excelled in this production. The entire cast, costume, sets theatrics and voice came together to create a masterful period piece, depicting so well the historical time in all its poverty, suffering, freedom fighting, and even faith. A most moving story and artistry in all its forms. You will find yourself immersed in the emotional torment, senseless violence and the pain of injustice. It will linger and stay with you. If you look around the world today, you can't help but note the similarity in the inhumanity of our world still. Pain, injustice; it's everywhere and still we pray to a higher being when we are ready. That faith shines through in different parts of the film where it is desperately needed. The movie touched my soul to the point of tears for both me and my husband. The talent of the cast, the story itself and the music with its captivating words, could cause trickles of tears down your face. The actors compelling and passionate songs, inspired you to empathize with the heartbroken characters and appreciate even more, the superb comedic relief and fine acting of Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonhem Carter, both of whom can sing too! I am ready for the soundtrack as soon as it becomes available. What a fabulous story in all its "grace" and glory.
