    Les Misérables

This 2012 version of "Les Misérables" is one to seek out. It's well acted, and the production is first-rate. While it is sometimes obvious that this material was meant for a stage play rather than an actual movie it's moving and very entertaining. Yes I mean it when I say that it's entertaining. It's tragic and at times I'd even say "depressing" but any movie that is as compelling and inspired at this one fills you with joy and hope in the end. There is a lot of material in this story but the bulk of it centers on an escaped convict named Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) living in France in the 1800s. Inspired to turn his life around, he becomes a good man who is destined to be forever afraid of being captured again by police inspector Javert (Russell Crowe) The film also stars Amanda Seyfried as Jean Valjean's adopted daughter Cosette and Anne Hathaway as Cosette's mother Fantine.

It isn't enough that we get extraordinary performances from the cast; we also get some big surprises as many people turn out to have great singing voices during the film's numerous musical scenes. While the dialogue is sometimes hard to understand (with the music and singing and all) the film is well shot, with the characters' mouths clearly visible whenever they are singing/talking. Every effort has been made to make the dialogue as clear and understandable as possible. Don't think that we're going to get static shots of talking heads though, all of the performers and actions are always framed in interesting ways, partially to show off the elaborate set design and costumes and also to add a bit of variety in the shots. With the powerful actors and the timeless story in perfect unison, don't be surprised if you get misty-eyed and if you see some people in the audience barely holding back tears.

It's sad but I have to admit that unfortunately, this film is not going to be for everyone. If you don't like musicals, this is not going to win you over because nearly every scene features constant singing and music. As for fans of the original book or previous productions, I'm not sure how you will feel about this more cinematic interpretation. I myself am familiar with the story to a certain extent but this is the first time I've actually sat down and listened/watched the whole thing. It is nevertheless a meticulously crafted movie and if you're on the fence about seeing it, you definitely should. Even if you are unfamiliar with the story and the musical, you'll likely recognize at least one song and will be singing it to yourself as you exit the theatre. They're that good. Yes it's a praise that goes more towards the original material than this film, but this movie brings something special to the story.

It's an epic movie, the kind we seldom see nowadays. With great drama, memorable songs, wonderful production values and just a smidge of comedy to give you those much needed emotional breaks, it's a picture you won't soon forget and is sure to please. (Theatrical version on the big screen, January 12, 2013)
