I did not read the book, but the trailers were very intriguing so I had to see Mr. Holmes. Sir Ian McKellen portrays an ageing Sherlock Holmes with great intelligence, humour (both good and bad) and sophistication. His character's diminishing intellectual capabilities are treated with great sensitivity. The cinematography is lush and beautiful and transported me to a different age. The film had so few characters and settings it could be a great stage play. Yes the film was slow moving, languid and intelligent. In other words, quite noticeably NOT an American film. If you appreciate great writing, beautiful scenery, intelligent performances and interesting characters and plots you will definitely enjoy this film.
