Quite a disappointment, really. A reworking of the Holmes story which presents the notion that Sherlock Holmes was a real man who walked amongst us and that the books (rather like penny dreadfuls or pulp) were written by Dr. John Watson and thus Conan Doyle is entirely out of the picture. Some humor is generated when Holmes states that the deerstalker was not warn by him and the pipe was not his preference, in fact he preferred cigars. These props were, in reality, embellishments provide by the writer. Even though Ian Mckellen delivers a fine performance as a doddering Holmes who is losing his memory and perhaps sinking into Alzheimers, the movie is plodding and kind of a mess and it taxes the viewer's patience in trying to sort out the three main story lines, none of which are particularly interesting and especially the main one involving a long ago case that was solved unsatisfactorily. I think these rebootings of the Holmes legend are unnecessary and uncalled for.
