This is truly an art-house cinema masterpiece. It is also very witty (if you're well educated enough to understand the references) There are very few characters and very few locations to distract, so you are drawn into their isolated world which may not be so different than yours. Only Lovers Left Alive is a very simple film, starring very few, complex and beautiful characters. At a basic level, it is about a long-term marriage/relationship and unconditional love, great friendship, family issues, urban decay and societal collapse, loneliness, and inter-connectedness. They are intelligent, sexy, beautiful, and philosophical "vampires", not comic book characters. The soundtrack is as haunting, sensuous and beautiful as the film. Besides the obvious - Tilda and Tom are beautiful to look at - they have a hypnotic, easy and believable chemistry. At one point Eve (Tilda) eludes to their vampire marriage starting over 300+ years before and I left believing their lives and their love for each other would be eternal no matter what the future holds.
