This dramatic thriller from 1947 is a very fine work as a private eye's past comes back to haunt him. Most in 1947 felt both the film and Robert Mitchum should have been up for Oscars, but that never came to be. Mitchum had a run with drug possession (weed) after his Supporting Oscar Nomination for The Story of G. I. Joe in 1945 and it seems Hollywood never forgot it. He never was nominated again even for great roles like Heaven Knows Mr. Allison.
