This is an exceptional movie focused around tragedy, family, passion, and love. The film is derived from Euripides's famous ancient Greek play bearing the same title but set in the 1960’s. Jules Dassin is excellent in his directing and the music composed by Mikis Theodorakis is outstanding. The acting is also first rate, especially from the stars of this production - Melina Mercouri, Raf Vallone, and Anthony Perkins. There are strong and raw emotions displayed by the actors which add to the potency of the film. The fact that the movie takes place in Paris, London, and especially on the beautiful Greek island of Hydra allows for breathtaking cinematography which further adds to the richness of this production. This is a powerful modern day version of the Greek tragedy.
