The Queen of Katwe is one of those finely paced character-driven pieces that reminded me of an authentic 'back in the day' movie experience. If you are looking for an adrenalin charged conflict, you won't find it here. Sure, there are challenges, more of the heart than of the body. Foreign films are somehow more graceful and flavourful than the mediocre North American tripe and this was no exception. The beautiful Madina Nalwanga gave a touching performance as Phiona, her youth and vulnerability the key to the story. Though Lupita Nyong'o's performance as the mother was inconsistent, her energy was authentic and interesting. David Oyelowo was outstanding as the mentor. Some scenes seemed slightly protracted, but never so that you lost interest in the characters and the outcome. If you're looking for a feel-good movie, Mira Nair has ensured that you won't go wrong with the Queen.
