Atom Egoyan's films are like improvisations by a jazz musician. The notes are the same as written in conventional composition, but in diffusive order. Yet, there is a definitive style. This is a quietly wound tale, it seems straight ahead, but with a bend or two. Some may find the topic hard to relate to, or too much overdone. It can never be. The script has economy, suggestion is the vehicle. Christopher Plummer is very adept here, as inheriting of a character as it gets. Martin Landau similarly, puts a quietly emphatic performance in. I found the film a little under-percolated, save once or twice. Still, pretty good and worth a watch. I'd welcome a stage interpretation, it's well suited to the boards. I've given films no where near as fine, as much. Yet, knocked down better films to the rating I'm giving here. An honest 7, good tune not a masterpiece.
