    Rocky

What do I want to say? That on the big screen you can see the two red roses growing in front of Adrian's veranda? In Mickey's locker room hangs a sign that says," No kissing"? That in Rocky's messy apartment can be viewed an old bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken? Beside Rocky's clock at four a. m. is a book of 1968 baseball statistics? These are the interesting details supporting a classic, visible only on the large screen.

Astonishing performance from Sylvester Stallone. If there is a stronger word than it, it applies to his realistic efforts to turn a rundown loser into a world champion. From drinking raw eggs to sprinting along the waterfront, not to mention doing one-handed pushups, Rocky's desire is the portrait of Stallone overcoming his own failings, with a determination that set him apart as an actor. A lovely man unable to express himself without suffering first.

The supporting characters, mainly Talia Shire and Burt Young, but also Burgess Meredith and Carl Weathers keep the story moving. The lesser roles of Jergens the fight promoter and Gazzo the loan shark contribute understated heart. So many things go into the making of an enduring classic; this is a team effort that delivers a winner.

Surprising in this latest viewing was the heavy accent on story. Not unlike Jaws, Rocky relies on character development for much of its running length, before it gets going as Rocky begins his training. This is not a boxing movie, but a tale of perseverance and determination to survive one's environment.
