    Spotlight

A good film, outstanding performance from Liev Schreiber as he commands the direction of the Boston Globe's investigation into the abuses of the Catholic Church. If you close your eyes you will hear Dustin Hoffman's voice from All The President's Men; Schreiber gives this film its gravitas.

Perhaps mishandled was the implied influence of the Church over most of the city of Boston. Despite much protestation on the part of key witnesses, the film suffers from the lack of a worthy adversary to the Spotlight investigation team. If this was intentional, to depict the Church as weak, that end is achieved. But there is less tension in the movie as a result.

The point is to illuminate the truth, and Spotlight is dead on with its focus. It is a subtle enlightenment, not an indictment, so that the unease its findings creates is personal rather than public. You squirm inwardly, reflect on your own children, questioning all avenues of society in which trust is placed regarding child care.

Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, and Mark Ruffalo keep the story moving. The actors portraying the victims are astonishingly good, with Rachel MacAdams excellent as the concerned yet professional press investigator.  Spoiler alert - click to reveal textThe hopeless, helpless, misguided priest at the door, protected by his vicious sister, highlights a mind blowing moment of revelation.

Terrifying in its conclusions, Spotlight makes you bless yourself and pray for a better world.
