It has been several days since I saw Suite Francaise and I am still unsure whether I liked it or not. It did not capture the passion (love and hate, good vs evil, war, etc.) of the book, however, it was beautiful to look at French countryside. As beautiful as she is, I was bored senseless watching Michelle Williams in the starring role. Kristin Scott Thomas was perfectly cast as a controlled and domineering, wealthy and self-centered country lady, as well as "the mother-in-law from hell." By far, the best performance in the film was from Matthias Schoenaerts whose performance was nuanced, conflicted and passionate. It is unusual for a WWII story to be told from a female point of view, and one of the many reasons this film (and more so the book) are relevant.
