I enjoyed (or appreciated) the movie which takes place during the Nazi occupation of a suburb of Paris. The novel on which it is based was written by a Jew who was killed in a death camp by the Nazis and was written as the occupation unfolded and published many years later by her daughter. The focus is on the relationship between a married French woman and a married German officer who is billeted in her house (or rather the house of her mother-in-law) There is no spark to the relationship though. Collaboration is discussed, as unsolicited information is sent to the Germans by the French villagers. But anyone having anything to do with the Germans is suspected of collaboration.
I think there were was some comment about it not being realistic that a composer could also kill civilians so easily, but a lot of the SS leadership were lawyers and look what they did as part of the killing squads in Eastern Europe.
