    The Adventures of Pluto Nash

"The Adventures of Pluto Nash" is a total failure. The jokes aren't funny, the action is dull, the plot is repetitive and despite the huge budget, it looks cheap. Eddie Murphy plays the titular character, a former smuggler now nightclub owner. When gangsters blow up his club, Pluto, his robotic assistant Bruno (Randy Quaid), the nightclub waitress/singer (Rosario Dawson) become determined to find out who the mysterious Rex Crater, the man responsible for this attack, truly is.

There are no good excuses here. I can understand how an amateur writer might not be able to make a funny script, or how a hack director might not be able to make anything compelling, but how is It that this movie, with its huge budget and big stars can manage to look as cheap as it does. Everything here looks like an old 50's sci-fi film that's been digitally remastered, not a big production. I'll admit that I laughed a couple of times, but that doesn't counterbalance the long stretches that are completely dead and some of the bad jokes that get repeated over and over.

I'm not sure because the overall result Is so incompetent, but I think this is supposed to be an action comedy. If that's the case, it's equally terrible. The script creates situations where characters are shooting at each other and there should be some tension or at least excitement because there are explosions and robots and gangsters… but you won't care about the characters and there really aren't any big sequences to get your blood pumping. Or maybe there are but they're so lame-brained that I didn't notice.

It's so bad it's not even fun to ridicule. There's nothing to recommend about "Pluto Nash" unless you want bragging rights and you want to boast to your friends that you managed to sit through a terrible Eddie Murphy movie of legendary poor quality. That's not even anything special though because the guy's been in so many shoddy films. (On VHS, November 23, 2012)
