Slight discussion of the plot, there are points in this film where I was wondering how much longer. Ain't gonna lie... it dragged. I is unclear why sometimes there was subtitled German and other times no. It was melodramatic. So I can't give this film top marks. However some of the criticism (especially from the professionals) is just nonsensical. This story is a perspective that doesn't get told as much in North American film... WWII through the eyes of ordinary Germans. That's going to be tough because apparently there are "rules" critics have for WWII movies and if the filmmakers didn't stick characters right beside concentration camps... it's whitewashing. Here's what I got out of the story... long before the bombs finally fall on this town, it had been choked to death by Germany's love affair with Nazism. From early in the film the adults are looking over their shoulders by the end a main character cries in terror "they took my name". That's not whitewashing... it's the story of the people who weren't put into the camps but Hitler managed to destroy anyway.
