You might ask yourself how a film with this cast, penned by Cormac Mccarthy, directed by Ridley Scott could not be a resounding success? Well the answer is by not having much of a story to tell. Sadly, while The Counselor has style to spare, there isn't much in the way of a narrative to sink one's teeth into. The basic premise of a drug deal gone bad is about all the audience get's in the way of storyline. The rest is just broadly opaic speeches, most of which you need a degree in post-modern English Lit to make heads or tails of. There are several WTF moments, though Cameron Diaz wins the gold for a scene that will never be removed from my mind (nor do I want it to be) Let's just say I've never wanted to be a Ferrari so bad in my life! Fassbender is about as cool and suave as a human being can be without slipping into self parody and Pitt and Bardem also help to keep things interesting, but all and all a definite disappointment consider all the talent involved.
