    The Divergent Series: Insurgent

My problem with the first film in the Divergent series is that it felt very bland, with no real personality. With this installment, the franchise finds its identity, but is instead lacking a crucial element that made the first Divergent relatively enjoyable, and that is narrative structure. One essential thing that films must do when being adapted from novels is to know what to keep, and what to leave out. Insurgent completely fails on this level, as for the first half of the movie, it tries to keep everything and cram it together into too short a sequence, causing events to happen at such pace that the story never finds the time to explain why anything is happening. For the second half of the film, Insurgent almost completely disregards the source material. I don't actually mind when films do this, and in Insurgent’s case, I prefer some of the film’s narrative turns than those in the book. However, the movie loses focus almost right away, and becomes lost in a muddled plot that sometimes raises the question, “what’s even the point”. There are multiple examples of plot points that have no real reason existing and are threads that if pulled, begin to unravel the movie. These problems stem from the lazy script, as many other elements of the movie were actually good. The cast is undeniably talented, and almost all of the leads give very good performances (save for Theo James) The problem is that the script doesn't allow many of them to do much, and instead focuses on moving from plot point to plot point. Director Robert Schwentke is very capable at directing action scenes, and these sequences provide most of the film ’s entertaining qualities. I haven't read the final book in the Divergent series (Allegiant), nor do I know anything about what happens, but the way this film teases the next installment is perfect, and makes me at least mildly curious to see the next film despite not particularly enjoying this chapter in the series. Insurgent isn't a good movie, but it is somewhat entertaining. The action is exciting and there are lots of special effects to enjoy. However, the movie is a narrative mess with an overabundance of conveniences as well as rushed, pointless scenes. It is definitely going to please fans, but all others can pass.
