Written by star Brit Marling The East explores the inner workings of an eco-terrorist cell and its infiltration by a young undercover operative tasked with exposing them before their "JAMS" escalate beyond mere pranks to serious crimes. Although the film may not lead audiences down a very exiting path, it is certainly a thought provoking one, a rarity these days. Marling is in every scene and does most of the emotional heavy lifting but gives all the juicy lines to co-stars Ellen Page and Alexander Skarsgard, both of whom are excellent. An important subject exceedingly well told minus most of the liberal preaching and melodrama that tends to follow.
