The suffocating repressiveness of the Victorian era is superbly captured by director Bruce Beresford in The Getting of Wisdom. It's an incredible tale of a free-spirited, almost incorrigible 13 year old girl from the Outback who is enrolled in a prestigious boarding school. This coming of age story is very poignant as we witness individuality and self-worth almost snuffed out by the very system of the era. What is inspiring is the very fact that the young woman has the fortitude and strength to mature on her own terms in such a society!
