It's Peter Jackson so it's nicely filmed but very liberal in the interpretation of the books. I found it better than the first installment overall. Some scenes are so over the top though that they become laughable. The book essentially focuses on the company of dwarfs with Bilbo and Gandalf. Jackson chose to give way too much importance to the elves. The way he portrayed them bothered me too. Here, they are super hero X-Men like characters with quasi indestructible powers and in Tolkien's world they are not. Very agile and excellent archers they are but they are not a combination of ninja, samurai and top class mixed martial artists. When I saw Legolas throw the great big orc around, I couldn't believe my eyes. In a hand to hand fight like that the orc would have crushed his bones. And that barrel scene where he jumps around and flips and does all kinds of cool moves, I thought I was having flash backs of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon! That being said, I don't think anybody could have done it like Jackson did nit picks and all. The books are masterpieces and no adaptation is ever going to be truly satisfying. It's as close as it gets IMHO. I enjoyed it.
