The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

This movie is ultimately the Deathly Hallows Part 1 of the Hunger Games series; where most of this pre-finale installment is build up for the epic finale next November. While the majority of this movie is clearly build up material, I do not agree with other reviews that claim "nothing happened" in this film. MockingJay Part 1, while lacking on the action front (aside from a few great scenes), is full of character tension, dramatic build up (obviously), and underlying themes centered around political propaganda. MockingJay Part 1 brought to the table something I liked about each of the previous 2 Hunger Games films; the gritty realism of the first, and the political subtext of the second. I also applaud the movie for being able to end on a note that does not feel like a total cliffhanger despite the book not providing such an exit. MockingJay is well acted and includes great special effects, while not trying to overdo anything. The movie is certainly entertaining, albeit it does present its own share of problems. My problem with the MockingJay book was it was too condensed, and just jumped from scene to scene, giving layer upon layer of exposition. I thought the book could have been a lot longer, and therefore I was not upset by the idea of it being split into two movies. The movie adaptation of the first half of the book does fix many of its problems, but throughout the first third of the movie, it repeated some of these mistakes. There was a lot of exposition and not enough character or plot development. Scenes would just "happen", and I couldn't get invested in the movie. This all changed at about the 45 minute mark when things started to even out. Despite a lack of action, the movie managed to be very entertaining, and even exciting. While I admit that Part 1 is more or less a tease of the second part to come next November, I will argue that I think it was necessary to split the book into two movies. If you're already a fan of the Hunger Games series, go see MockingJay!
