There are pluses and negatives here. Marion Cotillard is a marvelous actress who is able to convey emotion with a glance of her eyes. She is the sort of actress who possesses the charisma that you observe when she first enters a room. So the main reason to see this movie is to enjoy a fine actress at work. The movie arouses interest at the outset but soon becomes tedious. Joaquin Phoenix's character slips into bouts of shouting as he did when he appeared in (shudder) Gladiator. In other words-in his final scenes, for example-he chews the scenery and spits it out. But, the production design and the sepia-colored cinematography is exquisite. The film has the look of the Godfather Part 2; it places the viewer into the milieu of the 1920s. The story is a bit bleak and gloomy, but, you cannot take your eyes off the screen.
